Title: Building Food Security in Cumberland House Cree Nation Saskatchewan
Project Summary: The Building Food Security in Cumberland House Cree Nation Project aims to increase local food security by growing food in a controlled environment. Improving food security will provide healthier food resulting in a healthier community which is especially important for those most at risk of food insecurity such as: youth, Elders, pregnant women, neo-natal infants and diabetics. This project revealed limitations with greenhouse technology for this community such as: the cost of heating during winter; limited growing times and loss of food productivity. The project therefore, proposed a SMART FARM which will provide local employment, offer healthier food, and teach members of the community about healthy food choices. Youth will be operating the system under supervision, and Elders will advise on crop production and crop selection. The SMARTFARM will be ordered after the Covid-19 Pandemic, a SMART FARM coordinator will be hired to oversee the project, SMARTFARM operators will be trained, climate change and food nutrition education will take place in the local school, and crop production will be distributed to those most at risk of food insecurity.
